Characteristics of Disciple – Part 3

In John Jesus speaks about what it means to be His disciple—remaining (μένω, menō) in Him, bearing fruit, and walking in love. The key theme running through this passage is abiding—a deep, ongoing, and intimate connection with Christ that leads to spiritual vitality and joy. True discipleship is not about religious obligation but about relationship, obedience, and fruitfulness, all of which lead to a joy-filled life.

I. Abiding in Christ: The Foundation of Discipleship

“If you remain (μένω, menō) in Me and My words remain in you [that is, if we are vitally united and My message lives in your heart], ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7, AMP)

Abide = Remain

The Greek word μένω (menō) means to stay, continue, dwell, endure, or remain in a fixed position.
Abiding in Christ is a continual, daily surrender to His presence, will, and word.
Jesus is not just someone we visit on Sundays—He is the source of our life (John 15:5).

How Do We Abide in Christ?

1.Through His Word – Letting Scripture shape our thoughts, desires, and prayers (Colossians 3:16).  Reading, believing, studying, applying, declaring, praying, When we internalize and speak His Word in prayer, our faith becomes unshakable.

Neuroscience and Faith-Filled Prayers

Studies in neuroscience show that prayer combined with positive declarations reduces stress, increases resilience, and strengthens mental health. When we declare God’s Word:

The amygdala (the brain’s fear center) is calmed.
The prefrontal cortex (responsible for logic and decision-making) is strengthened.
The dopamine system (responsible for motivation and joy) is activated.
2. Through Prayer – Communion with God leads to answered prayers and spiritual alignment.  Php 4:6  Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.

Php 4:7  And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours]

3. Through Obedience – Remaining in His love means walking in His ways.  1Jn 2:6  whoever says he lives in Christ [that is, whoever says he has accepted Him as God and Savior] ought [as a moral obligation] to walk and conduct himself just as He walked and conducted Himself.

If we do not abide, we cut ourselves off from the life-giving power of Christ (John 15:6). But if we remain in Him, our lives become fruitful and aligned with God’s will.

II. Bearing Fruit: The Evidence of Discipleship

“My Father is glorified and honored by this, when you bear much fruit, and prove yourselves to be My [true] disciples.”(John 15:8, AMP)

What Does Bearing Fruit Look Like?

I. Character Transformation – Growing in the fruit of the Spirit.  Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Gal 5:23  gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Gal 5:24  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature together with its passions and appetites.

Gal 5:25  If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage–our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit].

II. Kingdom Impact Doing the works of God having Kingdom impact.  Jhn 14:12  I assure you and most solemnly say to you, anyone who believes in Me [as Savior] will also do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these [in extent and outreach], because I am going to the Father.

Jhn 14:13  And I will do whatever you ask in My name [as My representative], this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified and celebrated in the Son. [Exo 3:14]

Jhn 14:14  If you ask Me anything in My name [as My representative], I will do it.

III. Good Works – Serving others selflessly (Ephesians 2:10). Eph 2:10  For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above–spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]

How Does Bearing Fruit Glorify God?

1. It Reflects God’s Character – Our fruitfulness displays the nature of Christ (Matthew 5:16).  Mat 5:16  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and[recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.
2. It Demonstrates the Power of the Gospel – A changed life is proof of God’s transforming work.  2Co 3:18  And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.
3. It Multiplies God’s Work – Just as a tree bears fruit that produces more seeds, our lives should lead others to Christ.  Jhn 12:24  I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone[just one grain, never more]. But if it dies, it produces much grain and yields a harvest.

True disciples don’t just profess faith—they produce evidence of it. When we bear fruit, we point others to the greatness of God.

III. Joy Follows Fruitfulness

“I have told you these things so that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy may be made full and complete and overflowing.” (John 15:11, AMP)

Why Does Joy Follow Fruitfulness?

1. Obedience Leads to Spiritual Fulfillment – Joy is a byproduct of walking in God’s will Psa 16:11  You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore
2. Bearing Fruit Connects Us to God’s Purpose – When we live for His glory, we experience deep satisfaction.  Rom 14:7  None of us lives for himself [for his own benefit, but for the Lord], and none of us dies for himself [but for the Lord].
3. Joy is the Strength for the Journey – True discipleship is challenging, but joy sustains us. Neh 8:10  Then Ezra said to them, “Go [your way], eat the rich festival food, drink the sweet drink, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be worried, for the joy of the LORD is your strength and your stronghold.”

The world seeks happiness in temporary things, but true and lasting joy comes from abiding, obeying, and bearing fruit in Christ.

IV. Walking in Obedience: The Key to Abiding and Joy

“If you keep My commandments and obey My teaching, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.” (John 15:10, AMP)

Jesus’ Example of Obedience

1. In Baptism – Jesus obeyed the Father’s will, fulfilling righteousness (Matthew 3:15).
2. In Gethsemane – He surrendered to God’s plan, even unto death (Luke 22:42).
3. Paul’s Reflection on Christ’s Obedience – Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:8).

How Can We Walk in Obedience?

1. By Loving Others Selflessly  “This is My commandment, that you love and unselfishly seek the best for one another, just as I have loved you.” (John 15:12, AMP)
2. By Keeping God’s Word  “Blessed [happy, prosperous, to be admired] are those who hear the word of God and continually observe it.” (Luke 11:28, AMP)
3. By Trusting God’s Plan  “Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, AMP)

Obedience is not about legalism; it is about love. When we follow Christ’s commands, we remain in His love and experience deep joy.
